Rigus and I have been close friends since my 10th grade year in high school (a long time ago). He’s someone you can count on no matter the time or place. Mr. Cox will always give an honest opinion whether you ask for it or not!!!!!
We have been friends my entire life. At the age of 6 we stood side by side in the Little Angels choir singing the Crusaders’ song “We are Soldiers”. We were roommates when I moved to Birmingham. He enlightened me on how a relationship works. The conversation goes as follows “(Me) Hey D….. Cabrea is tripping. (Darius) What happened? (Me) She is talking about if I cheat it’s over. (Darius) Ummmmm yeah P. that’s how it normally works. (Me) Oh!!!” It’s the little things friends say or do that goes a long way.
Richard (better known as Papa) and I have been friends since my sophomore year at A&M. We became close friends as the years past and was even roommates my last semester in college. If anyone knows me, they know that I just don’t let anyone be my roommate. You have to be a special individual to live with me. Dr. R.B. Slade is a great friend.
I have known Quincy “Smooth Operator” Jenkins since my freshmen year at A&M. We took almost every class together. I don’t think either one of us could have graduated without one another. We spent many nights trying to find shortcuts only to spend all morning learning there wasn’t any. Who would’ve thought a country boy from Opelika and a big city kid from south side Chicago could have so much in common.
Mikestro and I met each other when we were 8 years old, at a birthday party for our mutual cousin. We became two peas in a pod in college. I think I spent more times at his apartment than my own. We both graduated with bachelors in the Engineering Department but we got our Masters in the Fun Times Department. He’s one of the few people who know the true Larry and Cabrea story.
Coach Welch (he likes it when you call him coach) has known me before I knew me. We grew up in the same church, with the same upbringing, and probably got some of the same whippings growing up. Dewayne was at A&M a year before me and Mike, but he introduced us to the Fun Times Department. He’s one of the biggest Auburn football fan I know so we celebrate the wins and I console him on the loses.
I have known Michael Jr. since he was fourteen years old. He was in 9th grade when I first came to visit Cabrea in Decatur. He has grown to become a nice young man who loves his fashion and music. You don’t have to take my word for it he will tell you about his ‘SWAG’.
Court and I have been friends every since we met each other…waaaay back in 1998 when we first tried out for Mane Attraction (our high school dance team). I remember how she was just a burst of energy. Courtney was a freshman and I was a sophomore, so I thought I had to take her under my wings. But little did I know, she adjusted to high school quick. We joined just about all the school activities together: cheerleading, dancing team, and we were also founding members of our high school sorority. We also worked together at our high school bank, and danced together at the Super Bowl when it was hosted here in Atlanta, GA. If you saw Cabrea, you most likely would see Courtney. She is a someone I would bring around all my friends, and family and everyone loved her instantly. Both of our families love to cook, so we were always at each other’s house to fellowship and eat . A special memory for me is when I came home from college to help Courtney get ready for her senior prom, she looked fabulous of course!
Renee is somewhat my older sister because she is one month older than me . I’ve always been inspired by Renee because she had a vision of what she wanted to do in life, and didn’t let anything stop her. Shalonda is now the CEO and Founder of her own company, Quest4Kleen L.L.C. She has always supported me in whatever I did. I remember when I was in college, she would help pay my bills and buy me groceries. Whenever I would come home from school, she would make sure to cook my favorite meals. What a great big sister! Because we are so close in age, we have always said we would have our first child around the same time. She got married last year, and I’m getting married this year…so who know!!
Mekita is my married little sister. From as far as I can remember we have always been close. People always say we have the same Asian eyes…but hers are much prettier to me. She also was one of my financial aid contributors throughout college. My sisters always looked out for me, and I am truly grateful for them. When we were young ladies, I would always take home all my cheers, dances, and step routines and teach them to Mekita and Renee…those were the days! Mekita is the wonderful mother of Bruce and Bryson, my handsome nephews. They both look just like me…their pretty Aunt Brea!
Krissi and I have been friends since elementary school. I know I must have spent almost every weekend at her house during those summers. We would watch the movie Clueless over and over, and I would eat all the cereal and she would eat all of the french fries. I remember us going to eight grade prom together riding in her step-father Lexus, we thought we were sooooo cool! We also cheered together in middle school, prior to her moving to Monroe, GA. Although we didn’t attend high school together, we still remained close friends. I would visit her in Monroe all the time, and I loved it. The one thing I love about our friendship is that we always find time to see each other and catch up. Now we have a rule to have a girl’s night every three months!
Waltae and I became friends after we pledged our band sorority together back in Spring 2004. She would always remind me and my line sisters of how she had our backs for five looong weeks! Krystal has always had this confidence and inviting spirit about her that I just loved. We have always been on the same page with just about everything. I know I can always get great advice from her. Our personalities are so similar in the sense that we love Jesus, and we are pretty laid back creatures. We tend to migrate towards one another in every setting, we just like to laugh and stay drama free. My favorite memory of us is when we were outside of her job at A&M, and we both prayed to God to send us each a nice man! And wouldn’t you know, I soon started courting with Larry and she and her long-time love started courting as well!
I met Teshia a little over seven years ago when I first started dating her brother Larry. She was the sweetest person to me. She met me with open arms and a smile…Teshia is always smiling. I have the best sister-n-law! We have grown really close over the years, and I’m happy about that. We love watching our reality shows and texting about them. We share the same love of decorating, so when she called me about three years ago to help plan Larry’s surprise birthday party..I was all in! A special memory I have of her is when Larry and I went on a cruise and she volunteered to keep my puppy Chloe. I was scared to let her watch her, because I knew Chloe was/is a hand full. Well needless to say, Teshia couldn’t wait to get Chloe shipped back to Atlanta.
Ibiso and I are sisters in many ways! We are Cancer zodiac sisters, dancing diva sisters, and line sisters (band sorority line sisters). She is one of the best dancers I know and I’m always captivated by her grace. We became really close after we pledged our band sorority together. I remember when we were in college, broke as ever…whenever one of us had money, we would give each other our debit cards to get gas and food. I always knew I could trust Pam. I would spend most of my days at her apartment in Normal Hills when I had a break in between classes. She would also spend a lot of time at my apartment, and I would cook us macaroni & cheese and hoagies. A special memory I have of Pam is when I graduated from college, and came back to my first homecoming band practice…it was the first time we had seen each other in a few months. We were so happy to see each other, we started crying tears of joy…(it’s a cancer thing).
Faith and I have been friends for six years. I met her at my first job after graduating college. This job required us to move to Tampa, FL to work for a few months, and she was one of my roommates. We pretty much did everything together down there; partied, work, and shopped! She became one of my dearest friends instantly. We related on so many levels, and I just love being in her company. She has a wonderful sense of humor. We both are so open and honest, with a carefree spirit. When I was staying at my parent’s house, she would give me the key to her apartment so I could go there just to get away and relax anytime. Faith and I also share the love of fashion and style. We find ourselves unknowingly, buying the same thing all the time.

My mother is one of the most generous people you will ever meet. I guess that’s where I get it from! She gave me pretty much everything I asked for as a kid. Even though we didn’t have much growing up, I never realized it because she always made a way. She has been the biggest inspiration in my life and the driving force of why I have continued to work extremely hard and make impacting sacrifices. I know she only wants the best for me, and I pray that I’m making her proud. I believe she was born to be a nurturer because she has raised six girls into women, and is currently helping raise all of my nieces and nephews. She deserves the world, and one day I intend to make sure she gets it!
My second mom and dad are the most supportive parents ever! They welcomed me into their home many years ago, and I refuse to return their keys to this day . Sharon was very hard on me while I was in high school, and I thank her for that. I wasn’t allowed to do anything outside of school activities. She made sure I didn’t get caught up in worldly things, and it really did pay off! Michael is the best dad in the world! He has taught me so much about life and people. He not only made sure I grew into a respectable young woman, he shaped the way I look at my potential husband. One thing he always told me was to look at the guy I’m dating family values, because that will tell me what type of husband I will get. I thank him for that advice, as I never forgot it and did indeed use it!
Larry and Linda Patterson are the parents of their 30 year old baby Larry Patterson. It’s difficult to say Larry without saying Linda. They were high school sweethearts, college lovebirds, and been married 35 years. They are just as in love as they were as newlyweds (pretty disgusting). Their marriage is a sweet story but the parenting and raising of their baby is not as sweet. The world know them as Larry and Linda, I know them as the enforcers. I cut our two acre yard with a push lawnmower from the age of 11 until 17 (when I went to college dad got a zero turn riding mower). If yard work wasn’t enough, my chores also included taking out the trash, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming (still trying to figure out what did my sister do). You probably saying that’s not bad but I didn’t list how I had to be the gardener/maintenance boy for P&B mobile homes park. The rewarding part is that I did get a big salary of $0.00. My pay was food and shelter. I got a part time job at Chick-fil-A to earn money. I did all of that while still being required to make A&B Honor Roll in school, play sports, and stay active in church. The most important thing they taught me was how to pray and talk to God for myself. It’s true that God watches over children and fools, because I know I was a fool for a long time. I finally realized they were only making me a man (In my dad words “I’m making a man out of you boy”). They were teaching me life skills time management, money management, and having a strong work ethic. Well now looking back at it, I guess ole Larry and Linda are not so bad after all. I think they are just being nice now because they love them some Cabrea. I’m starting to believe they like her more than me.
The proposal was an example of hard work paying off. It was challenging in numerous ways. Firstly, I had the ring a full four months before I proposed. I used that time to plan the proposal of her dreams. Do you know how hard it is to keep a secret from someone you talk to everyday, three times a day? Secondly, it’s because she’s naturally inquisitive. She likes to know why, how, when, and why not. So, when I said I want to have a 30th birthday party for myself, the first question was why do you want to have a birthday party. It was followed by, when did you come up with this and it ended with, you don’t even like parties. All the questions and statements she asked were good questions and so true. So, I had to change it from a birthday party/ surprise proposal to a birthday brunch/surprise proposal because she knows I love to eat. Then I had to sneak and get her friends and family numbers out her phone to inform them of my plans. Thankfully, all of our family and friends were able to make it. While we were eating, everyone was eagerly awaiting for me to pop the question. I went to the restroom to change into a tuxedo, and found the ring that my sister had temporarily misplaced. The room was filled with screams, yells, and excitement. It was one person in the room who wasn’t excited, but was rather confused. She asked me why did I change. She didn’t have a clue what was going on, that is, until I started expressing my love for her and dropped down on one knee…
It was sophomore year at AAMU, and I had just changed my major to Computer Science. I remember sitting in a Physics class, when I heard this guy behind me say “I like your tattoo”. I was flattered, so I turned around to say Thank You. That was my first encounter with Mr. Larry B. Patterson. A few weeks later I confronted him outside of our Physics class about a “big misunderstanding” I didn’t really care for. After that confrontation, we didn’t talk for over two years. That was a bit awkward because we had the same major, which means we were in several classes together. I remember Larry writing me little notes every now a then (which I still have), and trying to sit next to me in some of those classes. I just wasn’t hearing it because I was not interested. The tides turned, and all of sudden I had this strong interests in Larry. I can remember it like it was yesterday, it was spring 2005. Larry and I was sitting next to each other in our Senior Project class, and I wanted to get his attention. I had some of my dancing diva pictures and family pictures laid on top of my desk, and he took the bait of asking to see them. This was the first small talk we were having in over two years. My guard was down, and my eyes were set on LP. I had all my friends come down to our computer lab to see how cute and handsome he was. During that summer we really became close friends. We talked and saw each other almost every day. We talked about our families, faith, and friends. As that fall rolled around, we continued to see each other often. It was never said, but we decided to keep our little friendship/courtship between just the two of us. I remember this particular song “Secret Lovers” by Atlantic Starr would come on the radio almost every time Larry would call me. By the end of 2005, our friendship evolved into a relationship. That was Larry’s last semester in school, and he moved to Birmingham, AL to start his new job as a teacher. Because I had one more semester to complete, I stayed in Huntsville, AL. We were starting our relationship together, but in two different cities. Who knew that would be our normal way of a relationship. Larry would come to Huntsville to pick me up every weekend so we could continue to spend time with one another. After we both graduated spring of 2006, I moved back to Atlanta and Larry moved back to Opelika, AL. We both tried to find jobs in the same city, but with no success. I was offered a great job in Atlanta, while Larry was offered an awesome job in Montgomery, AL. It seemed like we just couldn’t catch a break. Every since we started dating, we never lived in the same city. We continued to stay positive and understood that we would eventually be together, if it was meant. That is how we made it these past seven years. We put the faith and work into our relationship, and now we are finally reaping the benefits. Marriage!!!
Fall of 2002 I noticed a drop dead gorgeous young lady sitting in front of me in my Physics class. I mean she was hotter than fish grease. She had on an Atlanta Braves fitted cap looking like Nia Long. I had to strike up some type of conversation with her so I said, “Hey excuse me, I like your tattoo”. She smiled and said “Thanks”. I looked at my friend Quincy and said to him, “I got to have her”. Things didn’t work out like I planned; that’s a story within itself. Now let’s fast forward to my second semester of my junior year. We haven’t had more than three conversations since that day two years ago. I am in my Project class and ironically we begin sitting beside each other. We begin having small talk and through some photos she introduces me to her family dog Misty. I knew I had her then….but again I was wrong. We didn’t start courting until later that summer. We begin meeting at Starbucks (I don’t even drink coffee) and helping each other out with school work… all the while keeping our relationship a secret until my last week before I finished my course work at A&M. The rest is history as they say.
I was raised in a small country community (Beauregard) outside of the Opelika, AL as the favorite son of Larry and Linda Patterson. I only have one sibling, a sister, LaTeshia Patterson (which explains why I’m the favorite son). I grew up a very skilled grounds man, gardener, and neighborhood errand boy. Thanks dad! My first love was football, but isn’t that a requirement growing up in the South? After graduating from Beauregard High School I attended the best school in the world, ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY. I graduated from Alabama A&M with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. The next three years I lived in three different cities (Birmingham, Columbus, and Montgomery) working for three different companies before I settled in Millbrook, Al where I have been for the past three years. The only thing in my life that never changed during the past seven years of moving and job relocation has been Cabrea Latrice Cook. She has been my foundation.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA to my beautiful mother Mrs. Evangeline Cook. I grew up on the west side of Atlanta for most of my adolescent years. I have five biological sisters: Kimberly Jacobs, Tamika Cook, Derica Cook, Shellbee Cook, and Tracy Cook. During my early teens I moved to the east side/Decatur to live with my uncle and aunt, Michael and Sharon Johnson and their three children. I gained two more sisters and one brother: Shalonda Slater, Mekita Arnold, and Michael Johnson Jr. If you do the math, that’s eight siblings! It was really fun and entertaining growing up in such a huge family. During my middle and high school years, I placed all of my energy into school, extracurricular activities and my friends. After graduating from high school, I matriculated to Alabama A&M University (the best school in the world!!). During my sophomore year, I remember having this pressing feeling to change my major to Computer Science. My dear friend who I knew since 8th grade had this major, and it appeared very interesting to me. I changed my major, and was immediately placed in a class with Larry B. Patterson. Surprisingly, we didn’t initially “hit it off”. Over the next two to three years, Larry and I didn’t exchange more than five words to one another, and we were in the same classes. It was my last year in undergrad and out of nowhere I had this courageous feeling come over me to let my guard down towards Larry…and I did. Next thing I knew, Larry and I became the best of friends. He was such a burst of fresh air to me. I felt a sense of peace with him. It didn’t take me long to recognize he would be in my life forever. As soon as I found my love, I graduated from college and I moved back home to Georgia while Larry stayed in Alabama. I knew what we had was destined, and if we were meant to be together…long distance wouldn’t break our bond. I went on to earn my Masters in Information Technology and landed a successful career as a Programmer Analyst. Interestingly enough, my best friend Larry is also a Programmer Analyst.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
